Freezing in Finland

Avantola: loosely translated as "frozen hole in the lake"
The next heavyweight champion of the world... frozen in Finland.
I went to a retreat with some LDS youth in northern Finland. These pictures show something quintessentially Finnish: they roast themselves in a sauna for 30 minutes, then jump in a frozen lake. They are crazy.

These people are all from St. Petersburg. They came to church in Turku on their way back from the temple in Sweden.

I'm giving these out piece-meal because the internet connection out here is so slow.

Great to see the "actual record" of the winter there. On your scenic shots with people included, it would create a _much_ better image if individuals were closer to the camera. Doing so gives you much of the scenery and, more importantly, more detail of facial expressions and light from the flash on the subject. This is particularly important on late in the day or in cloudy, overcast conditions when photos tend to wash out. Because these opportunities will never again come your way in quite the same way, it's important to take a bit of thought how the end product will be. These images are more important than you know and will become even more valuable over the years. Usually, _people_ are the most important objects in your images, so plan and take care to get them close to the camera with plenty of light (in other words, make sure you use flash, even in daylight settings ). Thanks for sharing these! Wed 2-Feb-2005 17:39

Thank you Dad for the continued technical support. I hope y'all are listening out there, that you're using appropriate lighting, etc, etc. Notice how much I improve on subsequent postings... Tue 5-Apr-2005 22:12

Here are some pictures from Turku, Finland. The snow has melted, but everyone promises that it'll be back soon enough.
